The Smokies from near Taig an Drama Day 12 - San Diego
October 30, 2019
Wednesday evening, San Diego, CA

So finally our road trip has come to an end. This last day of our trip we decided to take a tour of the USS Midway. The keel for the Midway was laid in 1943 and it was launched in March, 1945, and commissioned 10 September, 1945, just eight days after VJ Day. At the time, she was the largest ship in the world and the first of her class. She served in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. She was decommissioned in 1992 after 47 years of service and, in 2004, was moored in San Diego where she has since served as a museum.

Our visit included meeting David, a former Midway aviator who had served in both Nam and Desert Storm. He flew an F8 Crusader.

This afternoon we attempted to drive to the farthest southwest point in the state in the International Friendship Park. However, we encountered a sign prohibiting vehicles beyond that point. At that point we were approximately 1.2 miles from the southwest corner and about a half mile north of the border with Mexico.

The McDonnell Douglas F-<wbr>4 Phantom served from 1960 until 1996. It was employed by not only by the Navy but also the Marines and Air Force. The USS Midway superstructure. The 25 foot Kissing Statue recreates the photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt in Times Square on VJ Day. It's official title is "<i>Unconditional Surrender</i>". A group of Navy Seals headed out for training! I found this beautifully restored 57 Chevy in the parking lot of the USS Midway. Obviously a daily driver. The Blue Water Seafood Market and Grill is a Triple D restaurant. I had a grilled Ahi sandwich and ½ a dozen oysters. Jr had a grilled swordfish sandwich. He declared that swordfish is his new fave fish. We got within a mile and a half of the most southwest point in the US when we encountered this sign. I was willing to proceed but Jr had the sense to stop. Just up the hill was the prototype section of Mr. Trumps Mexico wall. Another lovely restored Chevy. This Impala is a Super Sport model with a small block 327 engine. (I guess its better to get only the front half rather than the back half.) Barrio Logan is a neighborhood in south central San Diego. It is one of the oldest of San Diego’s neighborhoods. This was another great mural along Cesar E. Chavez Pkwy in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego.
